Amare Stoudemire made some interesting comments when asked how he felt about sharing a locker room with a gay teammate.

Stoudemire, who is currently beasting overseas in the Israeli Premier League as a member of Hapoel Jerusalem, was asked how he would deal with having to share a locker room with a gay teammate.

While his teammates expressed they wouldn’t have a problem with it with one-word answers, the always-eloquent and artsy Stoudemire offered a more detailed response.

“I’m going to shower across the street, make sure my change of clothes are around the corner,” he said. “And I’m going to drive … take a different route to the gym.”

When asked if he was joking, which he obviously was, he replied, “There’s always a truth within a joke.”

Obviously, Stoudemire who has received a handful of humanitarian awards in his career, was trying to use comedy to make a point about how ignorant and homophobic athletes can be, while simultaneously giving the reporter the exact answer they were looking for. But, his humor was lost in translation and now fake outrage is brewing as people are ready to label him as homophobic.

Team officials have already attempted to get ahead of the backlash by insisting that Stoudemire was joking, although they regret that he made the comments in the first place.

Watch the video below to determine if you think Stoudemire was being serious. On another note, Stoudemire should consider lacing them up for Ice Cube’s Big3 league.
