The Raiders are moving. Today (March 27), the NFL approved the franchise’s move from Oakland to Las Vegas.

Reports the Wall Street Journal:

In a startling move for a league long opposed to gambling, the National Football League’s owners voted Monday to allow the Oakland Raiders to relocate to Las Vegas, a city that just a few years ago was considered off limits and now can claim one of the game’s coveted 32 teams.

The decision was sure to be mourned in Oakland, which tried over many years to reach an agreement to keep its longtime football team, but hailed in Las Vegas as validation that it has graduated to become a major American city.

The approval, granted here at the owners meetings, also represents a remarkable corporate turnaround for Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis , who a year ago failed in his bid to move to Los Angeles and appeared to be quickly running out of money and opportunities to find a new home that could help improve the fortunes of one of the league’s more strapped franchises.

An NFL team in the nation’s mecca of gambling?

Anyone saying that doesn’t make sense is in denial. Just saying.

However, the team won’t officially move to Sin City until 2019 or 2020. That might be awkward in the interim.
