Black Tennessee lawmakers Justin Jones and Justin Pearson won their special election races on Thursday, firmly reclaiming their seats in the Tennessee House after being expelled in March. Both of the Democrats were ousted by the Republican majority after their protest for gun control.
The Tennessee House expelled two Black Democratic members in a surprising move a week after they and another lawmaker joined students and parents protesting for gun control reform. Rep. Justin Jones and Rep. Justin Pearson were voted out, while Rep. Gloria Johnson narrowly avoided expulsion by one vote. She would go on to say that she felt the results were different "because of the color of our skin."
