The major motion picture Fruitvale has become the sleeper hit of the Sundance Film Festival. The film, which is based on the life and death of Oscar Grant, nabbed the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, the first for U.S. project to do since Precious,  in 2009.

The film Fruitvale, chronicling the life and death of Oscar Grant–a Bay Area man shot by police–has received a healthy amount of praise at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Helmed by 26-year-old Ryan Coogler, Fruitvale marks the USC grad’s directional debut. He also serves as writer of the film.

A 15- year-old San Francisco boy has met the same fate as Oscar Grant, Rekia Boyd and countless other black citizens gunned down by police. Derrick Gaines was shot and killed Tuesday (June 5) by an officer after he and his friend were confronted at a local gas station for “acting suspicious.”
