The only logical explanation that Charles Barkley can derive from Lamar Odom‘s stint in Dallas is that the Queens native never got over his departure from Los Angeles. According to Barkley the Dallas Mavericks shouldn’t be forced to pay the rest of the 13-year veteran’s salary, and the fact that they do disgusts him.
“I always pull for the players, but the fact that they’ve got to pay him, I think is a joke,” Barkley said on Wednesday. “I mean, because he didn’t earn his salary. He didn’t earn it at all.”
“I like Lamar as a person, but I’m disappointed about everything that happened in Dallas. And it’s a shame that the Mavs got to pay him, to be honest with you, because he doesn’t deserve to get paid for what he put out there this year. He doesn’t deserve it, plain and simple.”
The Mavericks finally were fed up with Odom’s lack of effort, and were forced to dismiss him from the team for the rest of the year on Sunday. Mark Cuban in particular took offense to Odom’s antics, which caused a heated halftime confrontation where he questioned Odom’s commitment to the team. Less than 24 hours after the confrontation Odom was banished from the team.
It has been assumed that Odom will try to return to his old stomping grounds in Los Angeles. Barkley may have a point though as Odom averaged career lows in almost every category, but despite those facts will still make almost $1 million for the remainder of the season. Odom is also due a $2.4 million buyout payment in June.
“To sit at home and make that kind of money really pisses me off, to be honest with you, for the effort that he put out there,” Barkley said. “He’s going to make hundreds of thousands of dollars these next two paychecks. … That’s not fair to the Mavs. It’s not fair to the game of basketball.”
Barkley concluded his appearance saying, “I’m just disappointed in Lamar.”
