A trial date has been set for 11 of the 13 marching band members charged in the hazing death of Robert Champion. Circuit Judge Marc Lubet announced October 8 as the date when the accused will face legal action, but according to an attorney for one of the former band members, the trial won’t start until next year.
“Given the amount of discovery, and everything that needs to be done in this case, and the number of defendants, it will be difficult for the case to be ready for trial at that date,” explained lawyer Craig Brown. “There is a lot that has to be gone through.”
Champion passed away last year, after sustaining several injuries when he was assaulted during a band trip. Since his death, the Champion family has tried to shed light to the dangers of hazing, even commissioning the help of Rev. Al Sharpton, who launched a national campaign to fight the cause.
Once the trial begins, prosecutors are said to call nearly 85 potential witnesses.
