Buju Banton Pleads Not Guilty To Drug Charges, Refuses Plea Deal
As previously reported, Buju Banton was arrested December 10 after police say he conspired to buy more than five kilograms of cocaine from an undercover police officer.
Buju, real name Mark Anthony Myrie, did not seek bail for the charge and was arraigned in court January 7.
He has since pled not guilty to the federal drug charge.
Since his arrest, Buju hired prominent defense attorney David Oscar Markus.
Markus says Buju will not seek a plea deal and recently released a statement about his client's innocence saying,
“Buju is innocent - plain and simple. He was set up from the jump by some evil people trying to take advantage of his trusting and honest character. We are all looking forward to getting him out of prison so that he can move forward with his stellar music career."
If convicted he could face up to 20 years in prison.
Damn, 20 years?
That's tough.
