A 24-year-old gunman opened fire at a screening for The Dark Knight Rises killing 12 in Aurora, Colorado Friday (July 20). According to witness accounts, the young man walked into the screening wearing a bullet proof vest and mask, and opened fire on patrons inside the theater after throwing tear gas into the crowd.

James Holmes has been identified as the shooter, and willingly turned himself in to authorities. “He did not resist. He did not put up a fight,” police spokesperson Frank Fania told CNN.

Holmes drove to the theater for the midnight screening, in a car with Tennessee plates.  “He looked so calm when he did it,” said a witness. “It was like scary. He waited for both the bombs to explode before he did anything. Then, after both of them exploded, he began to shoot.”

While 14 fatalities were originally reported—10 shot dead in the theater, and four who died at a local hospital— police later adjusted the number to 12.

President Obama addressed the nation from a scheduled campaign stop in Florida, which has since been canceled. “If there’s anything to take away from this tragedy it’s the reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited and precious.” he said. “I am so moved by your support, but there are going to be other days for politics. This, I think, is a day for prayer and reflection.”

38 people were also injured in the shooting. Victims range from ages 3 months old to 45.

Holmes, a former medical student at the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine in Denver, remains in FBI custody. Authorities found  “explosive material” and a  “booby trap” bomb in his apartment, but have  yet to uncover a motive, or determine whether or not the film inspired his actions.
