Inspired by a series of pivotal moments, journalist and editor Kierna Mayo spoke with fashion website StyleBlazer for the exclusive web series 'How I Made It' – sharing her strides and efforts in making a splash in the tough publishing industry and the importance of dreaming big. Currently the Editorial Director, Digital of Ebony magazine, the Brooklyn native's impressive career spans two decades and is rooted in the pride and self-awareness instilled in her by her mother when she was a young girl.
Before the time of birthday cards emblazoned with images of African-Americans, Mayo recounts how her mother would color in cards featuring white images for her daughter. Now working for Ebony, Kierna Mayo's lofty college ambitions and becoming a trailblazer by starting Honey magazine with partner and friend Joicelyn Dingle firmly places her as a true success story. She also details some of her early work at her first magazine and editorial gig at The Source magazine.
