School officials in Inkster, Mich. found a loaded handgun in a third grader's possession at Daly Elementary, Friday (Jan. 25) morning.

The school's principal was notified at around 8:30 a.m. and the child, a young boy, was met at the school's entrance. Within 30 minutes both the boy and the weapon had been removed from the school.

"We want to assure the community that the students of Daly Elementary are safe. No one was harmed," said executive director of instruction for Westwood Community Schools, Val Hughes. "This is a very serious matter. I'm very proud someone told. That's what we try to instill in our students. If someone has something that's going to hurt someone, or yourself, or you see something that you consider wrong, share that with an adult."

It has not been determined why the child brought the gun to school.

Gun violence at schools has been running rampant as of late. In December, 20 children were killed when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The tragic incident spawned several other acts of violence at schools, including a student in Central California who shot a classmate, allegedly because he was being bullied; and earlier in the week, three people were wounded during a shooting at a Houston area community college.
