Danny Brown Explains Old Title, Gives Prospective Release Date

Wild, prolific, and unpredictable are all fitting terms for snaggle-toothed MC Danny Brown. And this was before a recent encounter with a fan at a Minnesota show. With a highly anticipated album, titled Old, in the works, the Detroit rapper sat with Clash to discuss the project’s title, misinterpretations of the meaning behind 2011’s XXX, and more

Hip-Hop is traditionally a young man’s game, but it’s well known that Brown rests well at 32-years-old. Most think that’s the inspiration behind his forthcoming LP, but such is not the case.

“With ‘Old’ you think I’m talking about my age, or where I’m at in my career. But it really [refers to] when I’m experimenting, making songs with Darq E Freaker and stuff,” he said. “And then when I go back to my ‘hood, I have my people who be like, ‘Where that ‘Old’ Danny Brown shit at? I wanna hear that J. Dilla Danny Brown.’ So I [titled the] album for them.”

It’s been a couple years since the “Blunt After Blunt” rhymer released XXX, which Brown says was intentional.

“I can do feature songs and whatever, but when you see an album and it says, ‘This is a Danny Brown album,’ it’s gotta be at the most potent quality. And that doesn’t take six months. It doesn’t take a year. I tell people all of the time, it takes two years for me to make an album.”

The good news is that Brown ensured the project’s completion, give or take a few mixing tweaks. “I don’t see anymore setbacks,” Danny says. “For sure it’ll be out in August.”
