Harry Belafonte Requests Discussion To End Beef With Jay Z & Beyoncé [VIDEO]

An interesting war of words has been brewing between veteran entertainer Harry Belafonte and Jay Z. Looking to diffuse the situation, Belafonte has asked for a private chat with Jay and his wife, Beyoncé , in order mend the rift.

The feud was sparked after Belafonte said in 2012 that high-profile stars such as Jay Z have “turned their back on social responsibility.” In a recent interview with Elliott Wilson, Jay Z took offense to Belafonte’s words, responding that his “presence is charity.” Hov also took digs at Belafonte in a few lines from the track “Nickels and Dimes” off his latest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Belafonte, who is protesting alongside the Dream Defenders in Florida at the state capitol in protest of the George Zimmerman verdict, addressed the matter in an interview with MSNBC over the weekend

From the MSNBC interview:

I would be hard pressed to tell Mr. Jay-Z what to do with this time and his fortune. All I can be critical is of what he is not doing. This conflict that is emerging was not from me as a direct attack on Jay-Z or Beyoncé. I was at a press conference in Switzerland. Questions were raised by the international press. They asked about the artists and the social engagement of the past based on a film we were watching…

And I made the observation that the highly powerful voice that our community has, Black America has, there is so much celebrity power that it was sad to see that the collective of the celebrity power had not been applied to bring consciousness to the inequities that we face.

I would hope with all my heart that Jay Z would not take personally what was said because it was not said about him personally. Having said that, I would like to take this opportunity to say Jay Z and to Beyoncé: My heart is wide open and filled with nothing but hope and the promise that we can sit and have a one-on-one.

Thus far, there has not be a response from the Jay-Z and Beyoncé camp.
