An autopsy performed on a Louisiana man police said shot himself in the back and died while handcuffed in the back of a squad car earlier this year reveals another side. Victor White III was shot in the chest and not his back according to the official coroner’s office report.

Local ABC affiliate KATC covered the matter late last week, stating that the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office released the first page of the autopsy report. In March, White, a native of New Iberia, was detained by state police after they responded to a call regarding a fight. White allegedly was in obsession of narcotics and was taken away.

Upon arriving at the Sheriff’s Office, White reportedly refused to exit the car. A deputy wrote in the report that as they were requesting assistance, White took out a handgun and shot himself in the back. White was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

KATC has more:

The Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office has released only the first page of the autopsy report, which contradicts statements initially made by State Police who said White shot himself in the back while handcuffed in the back of a sheriff’s unit.

According to the autopsy, the bullet entered White’s chest, then perforated his left lung and heart before exiting his armpit area and lacerating his upper arm.

The report rules White’s death a suicide.

The case is still under investigation according to State Police Master Trooper brooks David. He also told KATC that the deputies first thought the gunshot entered the back but later changed their story to say it came from the front.

Without all the facts present, it does appears that the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office might need more people.
