Lupita Nyong’o turned heads at the 2015 Academy Awards in a flowing dress that boasted 6,000 pearls and said to be valued at $150,00. After the dress was stolen last week, the thief discovered that the pearls on the dress were fake and someone from Calvin Klein confirmed the news.

As we shared last Thursday (Feb. 26), the dress was stolen from Nyong’o’s hotel room the day prior. The dress, part of the Calvin Klein Collection and designed by Francis Costa, was billed as a unique offering from the international fashion line. While Nyong’o nor Calvin Klein never publicly stated what the cost of the dress was, TMZ reported that a stylist for the actress gave the estimated value quip. But it appears that the big ticket on the item was all wrong.

More from TMZ:

TMZ broke the story … the thief called us Friday afternoon and said he took 2 of the pearls down to the Garment District in L.A. and learned they were fake. That’s when he returned the dress to the hotel.

Law enforcement sources tell us … Calvin Klein’s people never told them if the pearls were real or fake. We’re told the only person who represented the pearls as real and valued the dress at $150K was Lupita’s stylist.

A source directly connected with the Women’s Creative Director of Calvin Klein, Francisco Costa, put it this way to TMZ, “Did anyone ever say they were real from Calvin Klein? I always assumed everyone knew they were fake, but I guess not.”

There goes that whole thing.

Safe to say the next time someone boasts about a dress made of expensive elements, folks can just assume it’s nothing more than costume jewelry.
