Big Boi re-broke all of our hearts when he confirmed that Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest were this close to recording a joint album together.

While we were mourning the death of Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest last year, Andre 3000 of Outkast revealed that Tribe and Outkast were just beginning work on a joint album. He didn’t say how far they got on the project, but the idea obviously never got completed.

Now, Big Boi is confirming that not only was the project real, but that they got as far as picking out beats for the album.

“Q-Tip flew to Atlanta with Ali Shaheed Muhammad, we all met at Dre’s house,” Big Boi said during an interview with Hot 97’s Peter Rosenburg and Laura Stylez. “We got to the point of picking out beats for the album. Then, some kind of way, everybody started doing stuff, and then Phife… you know. It definitely was happening, though.”

Big also revealed that he and Phife did manage to record some songs together and that he plans on putting them out in the future.
