Kiss FM is no more. New York radio station 98.7 Kiss FM is the latest casualty in the struggle for radio stations to remain relevant, in the midst of so many online options taking away listeners. The New York City station announced Thursday (April 26) that it is throwing in the towel, and merging with rival station, WBLS.

As of Monday (April 30), 98.7 will become 107.5 FM WBLS. The takeover is a result of an acquisition between Disney and Emmis Communications, the latter of which was bought out by the media giant. The $96 million deal allows for Disney to lease 98.7 FM as of next week, and filling the slot will be ESPN, whose previous home was 1050 AM.

The end of Kiss will likely be a hard pill to swallow for faithful listeners who already feel that there is a lack of variety amongst black radio stations. While the playlist format may not change, listeners’ options have been cut down from one, and the new lineup has yet to be announced. For now Steve Harvey—whose film Think Like A Man topped the box office last weekend— and his syndicated morning show will remain on the air, but Tom Joyner and Michael Baisden’s shows will get the axe to make room for radio personality Shaila from Kiss, who will take over the midday slot. WBLS host Jeff Foxx is scheduled for 3-7, and Lenny Green will hold the 7-midnight.
