Now here’s a strange coincidence. Jim Nelson, Editor-In-Chief of GQ, reveals in his Letter From the Editor column in the magazine’s forthcoming June 2012 that he served on the jury that convicted ex-Bad Boy rapper G. Dep of second-degree murder.

During the trail, Nelson was unaware of the “Let’s Get It” rapper’s Hip-Hop fame. “I never knew this until after the trial—the judge must have limited what we were told about the defendant, and I didn’t recognize him—but Trevell Coleman, I later learned when I looked into the case, became a semifamous rapper in the years after the crime,” wrote Nelson after re-telling the circumstances that left a man dead, at the hands of G. Dep, in 1993.

Nelson uses the letter to matter-of-factly remark on the nuances of the unfortunate circumstances (G. Dep’s guilty conscience, an innocent man (John Henkel) killed) surrounding the case. A detail Nelson shared that was troubling was that G-Dep had to actually follow up with the police in order to confess.

To Dep’s credit, he 37-year-old owned up to the situation. “You know, someone was taken from [the Henkel] family, so I can’t feel like I was robbed in any kind of way,” he said. “I just want to thank everyone that was involved in the case. I don’t have no ill thoughts towards anybody,” he told MTV News after the verdict. It’s too bad it took a murder confession for many to see how noble Trevell Coleman is, even if he is a murderer.

G. Dep will be sentenced on May 8th and faces up to 15 years in prison.
