Despite the public outcry over the NYPD’s “stop-and-frisk” policy, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has defended the police department’s right to pull over Black and Hispanic suspects without fair reason. During  an appearance at a Brooklyn Church over the weekend, Bloomberg lauded the actions of the NYPD—which have been called to the carpet for being racist— as a necessary tactic in curbing crime in the city.

“I understand why some people are calling for the stops to be eliminated entirely, but there’s no denying that the stops take guns of the streets and save lives,” Bloomberg said to a predominately Black crowd. “To borrow a phrase from President Clinton, I believe the practice need to be ‘mended, not ended’ to ensure that stops are conducted appropriately with as much courtesy as possible.”

Although he has defended “stop-and-frisk” before, Bloomberg’s timing couldn’t be more misplaced, given the fact that officials are looking to amend the very practices that have been criticized as glorifying racial profiling. Throwing his support behind the issues, puts Bloomberg in the company of political host, Bill O’Reilly, who has also had favorable comments on the issue.

Last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the adjustment to “stop-and-frisk” and loosening the  punishments for being found carrying a small amount of weed, in hopes to bring  “consistency” and “fairness” to New York’s legal system.
