The NYPD officer who killed 18-year-old Ramarley Graham, after breaking into his house and shooting him, will surrender to authorities, Wednesday (June 12).

Officer Richard Haste faces first and second-degree manslaughter charges for the crime, but given the fact that he applied excessive force –which resulted in the loss of a life– Ramarley’s family is not satisfied . A source noted that manslaughter charges are not “what they were expecting,” as they want Haste to be tried for murder.

At the brunt of the family’s disdain is dealing with the loss of a loved one. “Not a day goes by that I don’t cry. We don’t sleep,” said Ramarley’s father, Franclot. “All we want for our son is justice.”

Although the NYPD has refused to comment on the case, the department alleges that the fatal altercation was the result of an investigation into a drug trade in the Bronx neighborhood where Ramarley lived. Police identified the youngster as a potential suspect, and allege that he had a weapon when they entered the residence, which he shared with his grandmother and other family members. “We believe that this officer will be exonerated at trial,” said Patrick Lynch, president of Patrolmen Benevolent Association, a union representing the NYPD. “We look forward to a complete review of the facts in this case which will demonstrate that this police officer believed that he was pursuing an armed felon who bolted rather than be caught with an illegal gun. Several members of the officer’s team had confirmed the presence of a gun and that constituted a grave danger to the officers and the community.”

As the family gears up to do legal battle, they have also garnered the support of Rev. Al Sharpton whose National Action Network has vowed to “continue to stand with Ramarley Graham’s parents during the difficult days ahead.”
