A Detroit woman never got to see her birthday, after a weekend party ended in tragedy. Adaisha Miller was shot and killed after hugging a police officer whose gun accidentally went off, during a party celebrating her birthday, over the weekend. Miller, who would have turned 25-years-old Monday (July 9), was struck when she was introduced to the off-duty cop at the event, held on the city’s west side.
According to Sgt. Eren Stephens, Miller “embraced the officer from behind, causing the holstered weapon to accidentally discharge.”
Her mother, Yolanda McNair, told Fox 2 News that she was stunned by the incident. “For this to happen to her, whether they want to call it freak accident or mistake in judgment, it should have never happened to my child, and there’s nothing I can do to get her back,” she said. The bullet punctured Miller’s lung before hitting her heart, causing her to die instantly. “All she wanted to do was enjoy the weekend for her birthday.” She had every right to enjoy turning 25 and look beyond that.”
Given the various stories of officers killing innocent citizens —and in accordance with police protocol— the officer has been placed on administrative leave, while authorities investigate the matter.
