Things are getting ugly in the presidential race. Vice President Joe Biden has come under fire for likening the Republican party to slave masters. The verbal misstep took place during Biden’s speech at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, in Danville, Va. Tuesday (Aug. 14), in front of a diverse crowd, and was not well received.

“[Mitt Romney] said in the first hundred days, he’s going to let the big banks once again write their own rules — unchain Wall Street,” Biden said before uttering the line that drew criticism across the board. “They’re going to put y’all back in chains.”

Given the obvious comparison to slavery, the Romney campaign shot back at Biden. “The comments made by the Vice President of the United States are not acceptable in our political discourse and demonstrate yet again that the Obama campaign will say and do anything to win this election,” said Romney campaign spokesperson, Andrea Saul. “President Obama should tell the American people whether he agrees with Joe Biden’s comments.”

A representative for Obama’s campaign pegged his competitors response to Bidens words as “’hypocritical,” and tried to deflect the possible double meaning of the statement.

Biden has since clarified his remarks, but didn’t necessarily apologize. “I’m told when I made that comment earlier today in Danville, Va., the Romney Campaign put out a Tweet, and went on the airwaves saying ‘Biden’s outrageous in saying that – I think I said, instead of unshackled, unchained or – anyway, outrageous to say that, that’s what we meant. I’m using their own words,” he said. “I got a message for them, if you want to know what’s outrageous, it’s their policies, and the effects of their policies on middle class America, that’s what’s outrageous.”

Romney has also accused the president of promoting “hatred,” and said Biden’s comments “diminish the White House that much more.”
