An autopsy report has been completed in the shooting death of Chavis Carter, and has concluded that he shot himself in the head while handcuffed in the back of a cop car, last month. The report, released by the Arkansas crime lab Monday (Aug. 20) was signed by three medical examiners and reveals that the gun that killed Carter was placed next to his head when fired. “He was cuffed and placed into a police car, where apparently he produced a weapon, and despite being handcuffed, shot himself in the head,” reads the report.

Carter was searched by police twice, and while no weapon was uncovered authorities maintain that the 21-year-old was somehow able to conceal the gun.

Last week, the Jonesboro Police Department released a reenactment video showing how Carter could have killed himself while handcuffed. However, they have not responded to reports that he shot himself on the right temple but was left-handed, which may have made the ordeal that much more difficult.

Carter’s family believes that he was killed.

According to the two arresting officers on the scene, they walked away from the young man after putting him in the back of a squad car, and heard a gunshot. Surveillance from one officer’s dashboard camera was also made public, and while it shows Carter speaking with police, the moment where he allegedly took his life is noticeably absent.

The FBI has announced that they are conducting a separate investigation into Carter’s death.
