Chris Lighty is gone but not forgotten. The music industry executive shot himself outside of his Bronx apartment last month, reportedly over the fall of his marriage, and financial issues. As friend and manager to many notable figures in entertainment, Lighty is credited with cultivating the careers of the likes of 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and more.

When Lighty was laid to rest last week, former Fugees front man Wyclef Jean was among those in attendance, and shared his memories of the 44-year-old. During an interview with Montreality, Jean also explained why he didn’t speak to Lauryn Hill, even though he saw her at the funeral.

“I mean, I was at the funeral for Chris Lighty. Who don’t run into Chris Lighty and feel his energy and his spirit?” Jean said. “The most important thing [that I learned from him] is you’re not supposed to settle for less, and the only thing you can’t do is what you can’t dream. Anything you could dream, you could make a reality. That’s some of the stuff that I learned from Chris Lighty.”

During their last conversation, occurring a couple of months before his death, Jean spoke with Lighty about getting 50 Cent to go to Haiti. While at his funeral, Jean chose not to speak to Hill. “At the funereal It was just so many people. I  was in the section next to Missy [Elliott], Lyor Cohen…it was so many people that it was hard for everybody to intertwine at once,” he explained.

Hill and Jean had a very public falling out, resulting in him suggesting that she seek mental help, and it appears that they still may not be on good terms.
