The reign of the BlackBerry has come to an end. A report done by the New York Times chronicles the fall of the BlackBerry, which— ever since the popularity of iPhone and Android phones —is now being spoken about like an “embarrassing relative.”
BlackBerry owners interviewed in the article spilled the beans behind their technology struggles. One man said that his BlackBerry is so crappy, he has to depend on the help of his wife to get something as simple as directions, and she’s not happy about the whole thing. “Anytime we go anywhere, I always have to pull up the map. If we’re searching for a restaurant, I pull up the Yelp app. If we need a reservation, I pull up OpenTable. I kind of feel like his personal assistant,” she said. Aside from not being up to par with phones like the iPhone 5, at this point, BlackBerry users are suffering from phone envy, mixed with downright shame. “BlackBerry users are like Myspace users,” theorized a Los Angeles musician. “They probably still chat on AOL Instant Messenger.”
Others are so fed up with the device, that they’ve been driven to thoughts of violence. “I want to take a bat to it. You can’t do anything with it. You’re supposed to, but it’s all a big lie,” said a BlackBerry customer.
Noting a “cultural divide” between people who own a BlackBerry, and the rest of the free world, the Times explained that while the company is seeing solid sales overseas, stateside figures are a different story. In the U.S. BlackBerry holds a measly 5 percent of smart phone sales, a steep drop from the figures three years ago which put them at 50 percent. Additionally, Research in Motion recorded a $753 million loss for Blackberry in the first half of the year.
In related news, Apple’s iPhone 5 broke sales records within the first three days of its release. The company is also locked in a battle against Android maker Samsung, filing a $2.5 billion lawsuit for infringing on their patents and designs.
