Yasiin Bey, formerly referred to by the masses as the mighty Mos Def, has maintained his presence in the fast-moving and often fickle world of Hip-Hop since exploding on the scene in the late 90s. Although he has long since been removed from his New York underground rap past, Bey is still immersed in music without comprising his values.

In a short film from director Cam Be, “A Modern Marvel In Marvelous Times,” the enigmatic yet charismatic rapper unveils a little about himself, his move to New Orleans, and working with one of his adopted city’s most celebrated producers.

Filmed in glossy black-and-white tones, the film finds Bey visiting famed Chicago venue The Shrine for a performance. The shot opens up with the rapper in a reflective way before taking the stage, while introductory words flash on the screen as the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble band warms up in the background. The clip flips between shots of performances and the laid-back Bey dropping jewels. “I do have a place in New Orleans,” said Bey. “It’s been good for writing. I’m working with Manny Fresh out there. Not right now, but we’re working on a project.”

While Bey praised his new hometown despite its trials, he also showed love to the Windy City by speaking on the Chicago’s rich history, musically and otherwise. The Black Star rapper employs his deep catalog of hits for the live set, as evidenced in the clip which shows him running through “The Panties”; Hip-Hop”; and the classic “Umi Says.”
