One of the true pioneers of hip-hop music, DJ Kool Herc, is gravelly ill, according to media reports.

The founding father is suffering from an undisclosed ailment and needs surgery, but according to those close to him, does not have insurance and is in need of help to foot the bill.

“Kool Herc is very sick,” says DJ Premier. “For those that know about Hip-Hop, who we call the father of Hip-Hop, Kool Herc, is not doing well. It’s funny how we have a father of a culture that still lives, where as in some cultures they are dead and gone even though they may still be worshiped or reflected on in some kind of way.”

Kool Herc, born Clive Campbell, was an integral figure in the early development DJing and encouraging the art of break dancing, but since he did not capitalize off the music itself, he never earned a feasible dollar amount from the culture he helped create.

Therefore according to DJ Premier, he is asking for help for those in the hip-hop community.

“We spoke today, and he needs some help to pay his bills for the hospital because he can’t hold it down,” says Premo. “And being that he is the man who set this whole culture off, ya’ll should be wanting to do it any type of way that you can.”

DJ Tony Touch relayed via Twitter that Herc will be undergoing surgery tomorrow (Tuesday February 1), but is still in dire need of funds to pay for the procedure.
