Mariah Carey helped cap-off the 2012 BET Awards with a tribute to Whitney Houston. Carey started things off reminiscing about first hearing Houston’s music. “The first time I heard Whitney’s voice, I was mesmerized like the rest of the world,” she said. “I was captivated by the power in her range and her unique ability to wrap a lyric in an emotion.”

Carey also spoke on seeing the 48-year-old for the last time, while overseas. “Even then folks were surprised to see us sitting next to each other, clearly enjoying each others’ company. I miss my friend, I miss hearing her voice in laughter, but we’ll always have the music,” she added, holding back tears.

The late singer was remembered by the likes of Monica , Brandy, and Houston’s mother, Cissy, all of whom took the stage. Cissy’s dedication to her only daughter made many in the audience teary-eyed, including Kanye West.

The melody of songs included “I Love the Lord”, “I’m Your Baby Tonight, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” all of which brought the crowd to their feet.

Houston died in February one day before the Grammy Awards. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning.
