Talib Kweli has been experimenting sound wise as of late, and his latest track “Upper Echelon” continues that trend. Here, he defers from his patented soulful sound in favor of a synth-heavy beat.

This might confuse fans at first, but the moment the Brooklyn MC begins spitting things they’ll remember never to doubt him again. Remember, “This the upper echelon sh-t.”

A visual directed by California videographers Fredo Tovar and Scott Fleishman of APlusfilz accompanies the track as well. The shots are a compilation of performance footage, a girl sporting gold fronts and some freaky kaleidoscope scenes. A few notable faces make cameo appearances, including Yasiin Bey, better known as Mos Def.

“Upper Echelon” is the lead single from Talib Kweli’s forthcoming Prisoner of Conscious project, set to arrive on April 23. The former Rawkus MC has been rather giving with new tunes from the LP. Most recently, he released a pair of quality tracks with “Art Imitates Life” and “One Twos.” Both those and the Kendrick Lamar and Curren$y assisted “Push Thru” make a favorable impression about the quality Talib Kweli’s sixth solo effort.
