Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, hasn’t released a proper album since 2009’s The Ecstatic. With a body of work that stretches back to the 1990s, Bey has a vault of classic jams to rock. Case in point, the Brooklyn veteran thrilled fans last Friday (March 15) in Chicago by unleashing an unreleased jam called “The Light Is Not Afraid Of The Dark,” featuring production from the Windy City’s own Kanye West.
Captured on tape by the Camovement crew, Bey revealed that the song was meant to be included on his 2006 album, True Magic. With a legacy long cemented and fully intact, Bey proved to the crowd in attendance at The Shrine that he’s by far one of the best rappers to ever touch a microphone.
“It’s like, get ya mind right, Bey is in twilight/Suit in the limelight, sharper than hindsight/Cherokee eye bright, see through the hype hype, blew up the sight sight they hidin’ to find type,” raps Bey, after rocking an old-school chant for the hook over the jazzy beat from Yeezy.
Camovement caught up with the Black Star soldier after the set, and he expressed that Chicago feels familiar to him. “I mean it’s good,” said a relaxed Bey. “It feels like I was just here, but I wasn’t just here, that was October.”
Fans may have noticed that the Bey is always dressed sharp on stage, and he revealed that it’s a tradition he started a while back. “I started wearing all white when I was working with the Brooklyn Philharmonic [Symphony Orchestra],” he shared. “But I’m not the first one to wear all white on stage. I started to wear all black today.”
Bey is slated to release a new project with New Orleans producer Manny Fresh titled OMFGOD this year. Check out the clip of the performance below.
