The music is menacing, and the visual follows suit for Pusha T‘s grimy My Name Is My Name intro, “King Push.”
Don’t expect any of the typical rapper cliches in this treatment. The G.O.O.D. Music affiliate is “more BMF than Billboard,” as he kicks his street savvy rhymes from a blacked out room.
Lush, haunting chords, a sped up vocal sample, and knocking drums sound more like a horror movie score than a Hip-Hop track. Call this a ghetto gospel of sorts, but that’s to be expected on a LP Pusha’s coined “the best album of the year.” Actor Joaquin Phoenix produced the record.
My Name Is My Name releases October 8 via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Records. The project will also don Pusha T’s Kendrick Lamar-assisted cocaine opus, “Nosetalgia.” It’s currently available for pre-order through iTunes.
