The freezing cold war between North and South Korea trudges along with new claims that Kim Jong Un‘s country is up to no good. According to a “source” in South Korea, citizens of the North were held in front a firing squad for reasons that ranged from immoral (prostitution) to downright frivolous.

Reports the Huffington Post:

The conservative JoongAng Ilbo cited a single, unidentified source, but at least one North Korean defector group said it had heard rumours that lent credibility to the front-page report.

The source, said to be “familiar” with the North’s internal affairs and recently returned from the country, said the executions were carried out in seven cities on November 3.

In the eastern port of Wonsan, the authorities gathered 10,000 people in a sports stadium to watch the execution of eight people by firing squad, the source quoted one eyewitness as saying.

Most were charged with watching illicit South Korean TV dramas, and some with prostitution.

It’s been said that watching unapproved propoganda in North Korea is immediate grounds for death but things still sound a bit extreme. Alledgedly this all happened last month so if North Korea executed 80 people and managed to keep it quiet, then the South may be in danger given their close proximity.

The United States government has been known to intervene when crimes towards humanity are committed. If these allegations ultimately prove to be true (he said/she said at this point), we could be facing a serious conflict.

Or, South Korea could be trying to draw the other team offsides. We shall see.
