There are only a handful of albums that are universally accepted as classics…Nas’ Illmatic is one of them. We asked a few rap legends—DJ Premier of Gang Starr, Brooklyn MC Jaz-O and Hot 97 staple Funkmaster Flex—for their thoughts on the LP 20 years after it hit stores.

Nasty Nas’ debut set the Queensbridge rapper on the path to becoming a Hip-Hop legend. Besides Q-Tip, Pete Rock Large Professor and LES, DJ Premier blessed God’s Son with beats and offered some insight into working with him. Jaz-O, and that guy he is associated with, witnessed early Nas during a college tour. As a staple of the Hip-Hop scene in NYC, Funkmaster Flex saw firsthand Nas’ rise.
