Police in Cleveland are angered at the NFL’s Cleveland Browns organization after one of its players wore a shirt demanding justice for Tamir Rice and John Crawford. The Cleveland Police Union issued a statement to a local news outlet asking that the Browns apologize for the display.
Browns wide receiver Andrew Hawkins took to the field this past Sunday to play against state rivals Cincinnati Bengals. The black shirt Hawkins wore over his jersey read, “Justice For Tamir Rice — John Crawford” in white lettering. Last Sunday, another Browns player, Johnson Bademosi, wore a “I Can’t Breathe” shirt in support of the family of Eric Garner.
The union sent this following statement to local ABC affiliate NewsNet5:
It’s pretty pathetic when athletes think they know the law. They should stick to what they know best on the field. The Cleveland Police protect and serve the Browns stadium and the Browns organization owes us an apology.
The shirt protests have been carried out in the NBA by players from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls and other teams. The women’s basketball team at Notre Dame also donned “I Can’t Breathe” shirts in a recent contest, which also came under fire by police advocates in South Bend.
The NBA and NFL has not reprimanded any players for the protests.
