ABC’s hit show Black-ish has won over audiences and critics alike with its realistic viewpoints from the modern-day African-American family.
Expect an upcoming episode of the Kenya Barris-created show to challenge viewers to think inside the box as they’re set to live out usage of the n-word.
“We wanted to do it last year, but we felt like it might have been low-hanging fruit for us,” Barris tells Variety. “But in this off-season, you’ve seen where we’re at. As we’re supposed to be evolving, (racism) is still rearing its ugly head constantly. So we felt like the word was still timely.”
Unlike the Hulu/Amy Poehler dynamic, ABC is supportive and sees the show’s vision stating, “As long as we tell our stories in a comedic and respectful way, they are really behind us.”
The show stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne and became television No. 1 new comedy last year. The second season of Black-ish debuts on September 23, 2015.
“I have my own feelings about it and I know that a lot of people in my own house and my friends have different feelings about it,” Barris continued. “So I felt like the show was a good place to address it. Let’s examine this word and take a real look at it.”
