Nancy Lee Grahn is learning a valuable lesson that speaking on the struggles of Black folks incorrectly will set you up for embarrassment. Not only did the General Hospital actress come for Viola Davis after her historic Emmy win Sunday night, she must have also skipped class  during Black History Month because she didn’t know what the Underground Railroad was.

It all began for Grahn last night after she was live tweeting the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards like many others on the social media space. Grahn tweeted, “I wish I loved #ViolaDavis Speech, but I thought she should have let @shondarhimes write it.”

While Davis’ emotional acceptance speech after winning an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series won mostly everyone in the world over, it wasn’t good enough for Grahn and Twitter let her have it. But things took a bad turn when Grahn, apparently irritated by the accolades Davis was receiving and literally came from left-field with a tweet that started a firestorm of backlash.

“[A]nd i heard harriet yTubman and I thought Its a f**king emmy for gods sake. She wasnt digging thru a tunnel,” Grahn tweeted, clearly missing the point of the reference and misunderstanding what the Underground Railroad’s purpose was.

Naturally, Twitter users checked Grahn on her privilege and viewed her ensuing apologies as hollow. Also, some of Grahn’s more offensive tweets were deleted. What’s even more telling is that Grahn attempted to spin the situation in her favor and came off like a victim, but nobody was allowing that to fly. This was one of those times where Grahn shouldn’t have tried to tweet through it.
