The mayor of a small town in Oklahoma has issued a mea culpa after her husband and his friends dressed up as the KKK for a Halloween. Theresa Sharp, mayor of Lahoma, says the outfit was part of a “prank gone wrong.”
Cary Kent Sharp was identified as one of four men a neighbor phoned police about for burning a cross dressed as KKK members. Carry, 47, didnt’ think it was that big of a deal because he and the homies were just playing around. “This is ridiculous, really,” he said. “It was a Halloween night.”
He has since realized that the prank wasn’t funny, and said sorry for embarrassing his family. And it wasn’t a cross he was burning either. Just more fun racist jokes for Halloween. “It was held behind the fire to look like it was burning but there was no fire,” he explained. “The pictures we’ve seen claimed they were burning one, but there was not one burnt.”
Mayor Sharp was adamant that she doesn’t support her husband’s costume choice, and was out trick-or-treating with her son at the time.
A Garfield County sheriff threw in that the KKK costumes were the result of “bad decision making” and was done in “very poor taste.”
“It brings up bad images of things that 99.9 percent of Americans, especially Oklahomans, are adamantly against.”
In May, a mayoral candidate from a city about two hours north of Lahoma, apologized for dressing in blackface as a female character he named “Pollyester Kotton.”
