Donald Trump has pulled out all the stops to save his hopes of becoming the Republican Party’s victor in the upcoming presidential election against Democratic Party rival, Hillary Clinton. The controversial business mogul began reaching out more to Black voters in recent times  but people are still naturally skeptical.

The New York Times interviewed around a dozen Black voters at length and inquired into their thoughts on Trump and his attempts to speak to the Black audience. Given Trump’s recent remarks and his dour depiction of Black living, voters are pushing back and saying that he’s looking at things incorrectly.

From the Times:

Speaking invariably to almost all-white audiences, Mr. Trump has portrayed blacks as living lives of utter desperation. “What do you have to lose by trying something new, like Trump?” he asked a crowd in Virginia on Saturday. “You’re living in your poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed — what the hell do you have to lose?”

Marc Morial, the president of the National Urban League, said that black Americans faced challenges, but that Mr. Trump’s depiction of a hopeless, violent black America did not match reality.

“It’s an inaccurate portrayal of the community that seeks to define the community by only its biggest challenges,” Mr. Morial said. “Black America has deep problems — deep economic problems — but black America also has a large community of striving, successful, hard-working people: college educated, in the work force.”

While the Times  noted that Trump does have some support from Black conservatives, the overall outreach efforts from the campaign is not resonating with Black voters. Coupled with enough video and audio footage that shows Trump at his worse when commenting on Black people, this effort to win that segment’s vote seems haphazard at best.

Perhaps Alexis Scott, former publisher of Atlanta Daily World, said it best: ‘”It’s like he only watches “The Wire,” and that’s what he knows about black people.”
