It’s been just over a week since 20 innocent children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and First Lady Michelle Obama is offering parents advice on how to discuss the massacre with their children.
In an open letter, Mrs. Obama urges parents to ensure their children that their safety is a priority. “We can tell our kids that we’re doing everything we can to keep them safe,” she writes. “Make sure they feel loved– and so are their teachers, coaches, faith leaders, Scout leaders and everyone else who plays a role in their lives.”
Mother to two daughters, like many parents (including her husband) the tragic shooting hit home for the first lady. “It is now up to us to carry the memory of those who were lost in our hearts and to follow their example every day, living our lives as they lived theirs– with courage, determination, hope and love. Those are the values that gives us our strength as Americans and that we return to in times of crisis–not just because they help us heal, but because they define who we are, as a people and as a nation.”
The small area of Newtown, Conn. has wrapped up many of the funeral services for the slain victims, killed by shooter Adam Lanza. The 20-year-old first killed his mother with her own weapon, before heading to the school where he shot the children all ages six and seven, before taking his own life.
Since the shooting President Obama has commissioned the assistance of Vice President Joe Biden to help push new gun control measures. As a longtime advocate on the matter, Biden chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1987-1995 and focussed on crime legislation. He also constructed the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994.
