The National Rifle Association released a scathing new critique of President Obama’s position on gun control calling him both an “elitist,” and a “hypocrite.”

Released just ahead of the commander in chief’s announcement of his $500 million gun violence measure, the White House has called the NRA advertisement “repugnant and cowardly.”

Opening with the question “Are the president’s kid more important that yours?” the commercial inquires as to why he is “skeptical about putting armed security in our schools.” The commercial goes on to site Obama’s economic platform. “Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he’s just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security.”

Obama’s spokespersons, Jay Carney blasted the NRA for bringing the president’s children into things, saying that they should not be used as “pawns in a political fight.”

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs shared in Carney’s views. “I mean it is disgusting on many levels,” he said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe this morning. “It’s also just stupid.”

Today the president unveiled his plAn to put a dent in gun violence. He is requesting that Congress enforce mandatory background checks for all gun purchases—rather than solely from license dealers—bring back a ban on assault weapons, and halt the sale of high-capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition. “Let’s do the right thing for them [children], and for this country we love so much.” he said, quotes of which were posted on his Twitter page. “Along with our freedom to live our lives as we will comes an obligation to allow others to do the same.”
