San Francisco may be one of the most gay friendly cities in the country, but members of their home team aren’t as welcoming to the lifestyle.

Niners’ second-year cornerback Chris Culliver gave some candid, yet controversial, comments on homose-uality, just ahead of the team’s trip to the Super Bowl this weekend.

Culliver told Artie Lange that there aren’t any gay men on the team, but if there were, they better keep their orientation to themselves. “I don’t do the gay guys man,” he said. “I don’t do that. No we don’t got no gay people on the team, they gotta get up out of here if they do.

“Can’t be with that sweet stuff. Nah…can’t be in the locker room man. Nah.”

He went on to suggest that any gay players stay in the closet until 10 years after they retire.

This isn’t the first time a Niners player has spoken out against gay people. In 2002, running back Garrison Hearst shared a similar view, but apologized after receiving backlash. “I didn’t realize it would be so harmful,” he said.

Ironically enough, last year, the 49ers became the first team in the NFL to throw their support behind the anti-bullying campaign “It Gets Better,” which was aimed at lesbian, gay and bi teens.

Some are calling for Culliver to be suspended from the big game, while others defend his views based on the 1st Amendment.

Reps for the team have yet to make a comment on the matter.
