Wale has been having a busy first quarter of 2013, and the promotional push for his third studio album The Gifted is gearing up as well. The D.C. wordsmith recently sat down with veteran journalist Shaheem Reid for Life+Times’ The Round Up show. The pair discussed a bevy of topics including his career, handling fame and his favorite sneakers also.

Taking placed in New York’s famed Quad Studios, the Maybach Music Group soldier opened up saying that he intends to be even more involved than usual in the sound of his latest album. “I’m excited about this third project,” said Wale. “I’ve been getting my hands dirtier on this one. I go to sleep easier at night knowing I helped produce these records myself.”

Aside from his renewed sense of creative control, the now-successful rapper was reminded by Reid of his humble beginnings compared to his current stature. “[When] my living situation was primitive, I was still happy,” he shared. “I always think about that line [from Jay-Z’s “Song Cry”] ‘we was so happy poor, but when we got rich…signals got crossed,’ so it’s like I always think about that.”

Wale touched on a lot more, including naming his favorite Nike Foamposites, playing sports in high school, his stint in college and more.

The Gifted hits shelves on June 25.
