Charles Ramsey has become an overnight Internet celebrity. The Cleveland man is responsible for helping three women—missing for over a decade—escape to freedom. And all he was trying to do was eat McDonald’s on a nice Spring day.
In a clip that might make Sweet Brown re-think her five-year plan, Ramsey explained how he and his Big Mac became the talk of the town. “I see one of my neighbors across the street leave his house and run towards my house, but he doesn’t come to my house, he goes next door,” and that’s when things got weird. “So I go to the door to see what he’s looking at, and this girl is kicking the door and screaming so I go over there –with my Big Mac– and I say ‘What’s been going on?'”
Much to his surprise, what’s “been going on” is the girl, was Amanda Berry, someone from the neighborhood who disappeared a decade ago, and was assumed dead. “When she told me, it didn’t register until I got the call to 911 and I’m like ‘I’m calling 911 for Amanda Berry? I thought this girl was dead!'”
Yes, this dude and his haircut are both kinda weird (he’s got some pretty great quotables as pointed out by Crunk + Disorderly), but in all seriousness what he and that Big Mac pulled off was nothing short of heroic.
After letting Berry speak with the 911 operator, she confirmed her identity saying , “I’m Amanda Berry. I’ve been on the news for the last 10 years.”
Berry begged authorities to arrive before her captor returned home. Missing at age 16 in 2003, Berry was never heard from again after calling her sister to say she’d be getting a ride home from work. She was found with a 6-year-old daughter.
Two other women, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight were both reported missing around the same time as Berry, and found in the residence. DeJesus disappeared at age 14, on her way home from school roughly a year after Berry; while Knight was 20 years old went she went missing.
False leads in all three missing cases led to the investigation going cold.
Three brothers have been arrested for the crime. Among them is a 52-year-old bus driver.
All of the women were found not far from their homes.
