The Roots returned to their hometown of Philadelphia to host the sixth annual Roots Picnic Saturday (June 1). This year’s lineup featured an eclectic mix of artists including Trinidad Jame$, Sonnymoon, Gary Clarke Jr., Robert Glasper, and Naughty By Nature. As always, the legendary band also had a few surprises in store. One was an appearance by MMG rapper Meek Mill.

Just a day shy of gracing the Summer Jam stage, the Dreamchasers spitter appeared in front of the jam packed Festival Pier to perform a few tracks backed by The Roots. He kicked off a brief set with his new single “Levels” before running through the high octane “Dreams and Nightmares” intro and “Ima Boss.” Needless to say that the Philly native gets love from his city.

Meek will need that support when he finally releases his long-awaited Dreamchasers 3 mixtape. Hopefully that will happen sooner than later. See the footage from this year’s Roots Picnic below.
