December 1, 1955 marked a historical turning point in American Civil Rights history. On that winter day in Montgomery, AL, Rosa Parks became a symbolic figure for the movement when she refused to give up her seat to white passengers as fatigue from a long work day had set in. At the time, the south had strict segregation laws that treated Black people as second-rate citizens and in some cases, turned a blind eye to acts of violence and extreme cruelty.
The Republican National Committee outfit also known by their GOP handle did in fact acknowledge the date’s semblance yesterday from their official Twitter account. But, ladies and gents, that’s where the props stop.
In a misguided–or better yet, misworded blanket statement, the account posted a picture of the late Ms. Parks which read: “Today we remember Rosa Parks’ bold stand and her role in ending racism.”
Naturally, they opened themselves open for ridicule more than usual. Due to their heavy Caucasian makeup, the average voter usually equates the GOP with supreme racists with wealth. Maybe the stereotype is equally as misguided but in the past few presidential elections, their out-of-touch approach and division within their own ranks haven’t hinted at a brighter future for their outfit.
Realizing their mistake a mere four hours later (!), the account tweeted a retraction, “Previous tweet should have read “Today we remember Rosa Parks’ bold stand and her role in fighting to end racism,” but it was much too late for damage control.
