A Baruch College freshman who allegedly died because of a hazing ritual over the weekend was said to be involved in a dangerous game called the “Glass Ceiling,” authorities say. Early Monday (December 9), Chun Hsien Deng died from injuries caused by brain trauma while away with the Pi Delta Psi fraternity during a pledging retreat in the Poconos.
Deng, 19, who also used the name Michael, traveled with about 30 others with the group which calls itself a “Asian-American Cultural Fraternity” to Tunkhannock Township, Pa. Deng, a Queens native who was studying Finance at the college, suffered his injury after being tackled in the Glass Ceiling game.
To explain, a heavy object is placed on the back of blindfolded individuals who then have to run across a field while other members bark out instructions. While on the field, the blindfolded individuals are gang tackled.
According to a statement from the Monroe County district attorney’s office in New Jersey, Deng was injured on Sunday and the frat members didn’t immediately alert authorities. They instead drove him to the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center much later. Police say that the lapse of time between Deng’s injury and arriving at the hospital is being investigated. Reportedly, it was two hours, and some Google searches about his symptoms later, before Deng was taken to the ER.
Baruch is also launching an investigation, and issued a statement regarding its zero tolerance policy against hazing. The Pi Delta Psi event was not sanctioned by the school, and Baruch students told local news outlets that hazing was not a known practice at the school.
