In case you didn’t know so, Brooklyn is a concrete jungle. Sean Price, the veteran decorated soldier from the Bootcamp Clik has explicitly detailed his thoughts of his beloved city in full to close out 2013. Alongside Australian producer, M-Phazes, whose production has been a residual for rappers who prefer their rhymes in the multisyllabic variety, P unleashes the beast with the new EP, Land of the Crooks on Coalmine Records.
If you heard one Sean P. project, you’re well aware that him and lyrical slackness see eye to eye as well as Shaq and Wee-Man. On the short and succinct project (five tracks deep), don’t expect the motto to change so quickly. You also know that nobody is safe from a verbal onslaught (“I don’t care what you say after/P leave the stage with the 12 gauge for the gay rapper/Frank Ocean fan”) he comically spits on “Dump in the Gut.”
M-Phazes adds his magic courtesy of subtle basslines, trumpet samples and b-boy melodies that hold true to that New York sounds. And even though Land of the Crooks is only an extended player, the usual suspects in Roc Marciano, Guilty Simpson and Maffew Ragazino still find time to play Keyser Söze as well.
