Spike Lee’s marquee movie now has its own day to match its own street.
As the exact 25-year anniversary of Do the Right Thing fastly approaches, the community which the 1989 movie was filmed in saluting the director with his own day, cast in the movie’s image.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams held a press conference to announce this coming Saturday, June 28 would be named “Do The Right Thing Day.” To celebrate, their will be an open block party from 12 o’clock noon to 6 p.m. on Stuyvesant Avenue between Lexington and Quincy avenues–the shooting locations for the storied movie.
“The film still works; still people talking about it,” Lee said when he took the podium. “And I think that if you look at 25 years later, it doesn’t seem dated.”
Adams agreed saying, “Spike created an image of Brooklyn that was beyond headlines, the stereotyping and the negative images.”
Do the Right Thing also gave soon-to-be superstars Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Martin Lawrence and Samuel L. Jackson their first taste of Hollywood limelight.
