Robin William hanged himself, Assistant Deputy Chief Coroner Keith Boyd said at a press conference Tuesday (Aug. 12) morning. The 63-year-old actor was found by his personal assistant yesterday morning “clothed and in a seated position, unresponsive with a belt around his neck.”
A 911 call was placed by the assistant, who had searched around the house for him before discovering his body. “Superficial acute transverse cuts” were found on Williams’ wrists in addition to a pocket knife located in “close proximity” to the Oscar winner. What appeared to be dried blood was found on the knife, but tests have not yet confirmed that it belonged to Williams.
He was last seen alive Sunday night at around 10:00 p.m. His wife went to sleep that night in another bedroom in their home. She left the house to run errands the next morning, “believing that Williams was asleep” in a bedroom.
It is unclear when he passed away, rigor mortis had already set in when the body was found. An official cause of death is still “several weeks away” pending the result of toxicology reports. The coroner would not discuss a possible suicide note, as the investigation is still “active.”
Leading up to his death Williams had battled with severe depression, his publicist said in a statement yesterday. He recently checked into rehab last month to get support for the depression, and to maintain the sobriety he held onto for 20 years.
Several celebrities and public figures, including President Obama, have paid public tribute to Williams.
