It’s 2015, but there are plenty of lowlifes who would prefer the Jim Crow way of life that flourished prior to 1964. A noose was found hanging from a tree on the campus of Duke University on Wednesday (April 1) morning.

Reports Raw Story:

The rope has been taken down, and officials at the school located in Durham vowed to hold accountable anyone found responsible for the incident they described by an official as an “act of intimidation.”

“To whomever committed this hateful and stupid act, I just want to say that if your intent was to create fear, it will have the opposite effect,” Larry Moneta, Duke’s vice president for student affairs, wrote in an email to students.

The university encouraged anyone with information about the noose to call campus police and said a forum with university and student leaders would be held on Wednesday evening to discuss the incident.

According to the Duke Chronicle, the noose was made from yellow rope and was found hanging from a tree around 3 a.m. in the school’s Bryan Center plaza.

An anonymous groupe called Duke People of Color Caucus posted an image of the noose with the following caption.

To all black students, staff, faculty, and/or Durhamites on campus and in the area: Please take care of yourselves and each other. This campus is not a safe space, and has proven beyond any doubt that it is a hostile environment for any and all black people.

This incident comes a couple of weeks after students chanted a racist song at a Black female student on Duke’s campus.

It’s April Fool’s Day, but a noose is nothing to joke about, ever.
