Marvel’s Wolverine franchise is closing a chapter as Hugh Jackman will appear in Wolverine 3, the third and final installment featuring the 47-year-old actor. In a recent interview, the film’s producer confirmed that the movie will be rated R and will be released in under a year’s time.

Wolverine and the X-Men have existed far outside the current Marvel Cinematic Universe most have come to love, but the mutant side of the comic book adaptation of the equation has enjoyed a considerable  fandom. Coupled with the fact that Jackman’s portrayal of the indestructible metal-clawed warrior has been so spot-on, it begs the question of where does the franchise go from here.

Filming for Wolverine 3 is underway, and producer Simon Kinberg confirmed the film’s R-Rating during a presser for the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse in London.

From Collider’s exclusive report:

“It’s a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies.”

While Kinberg wouldn’t go so far as confirming that Patrick Stewart is co-starring in the movie, he did confirm that it will be R-rated and teased the setting and tone:

“I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I will agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be a part of that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

The decision to go with the R-Rating seems to be inspired by the success of Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds. But what of the Wolverine franchise itself? Without Jackman snarling and growling in the role, it would take an actor of considerable talent to replace those big shoes.

Wolverine 3 will be released in March 2017.
